Without music, life would be a mistake [14 Aug 2005|01:32am]

[ music | Titanic Theme LOL ]

OK, lets see. Thursday was an awesome day. As soon as rookie pre camp got over, Ashley and I hung out. We did lots of fun stuff, and we played our game that we play usually when I mention anything about carrots. Thats a fun game. Anyway, we hung out at her house for a while, then went to the woods for a while, and we found an ice cream man and got ice cream, and Ashley cut my lip with a popsicle. lol So after we made nice with the ice cream man we met this little mexican girl who was screaming cause she didnt have any ice cream. Then we went back to the woods for a while, and we made up games with the ice cream, and/or the popsicle straw. And then friday, i dont remember what i did, so i'll skip to saturday. Uh, i switched rooms with my brother, so i had a lot of work to do. I still have a lot of work to do actaully, but my room is gonna be sweet. When i'm at band camp, my dad is gonna paint a mural on my one wall of the silhoutte of mickey mouse conducting the big orchestra. My room is gonna be 100% music, my walls and bed and everything are gonna be music themed. Its gonna be sweet. Yeah, i had to clean all my music out of my old room, wow, thats a lot of music. I pulled out a couple of huge containers i filled with all sheet music so far, i think i'm about half done. Now i just have to organize it all in my sweet filing system that i made up. I also worked on my newest piece some. Its so cool, i dubbed it TheAshleyHappyMarch, for lack of a better name. Its really bouncy, i like it a lot. Well church is in a couple hours, so i need to sleep. Plus, i need to eat some carrots. LOL

OK, so today was pretty fun, after we got home from the church campout, which wasnt that bad i guess, we came home for like 3 hours, then i went to youth, and after that, the book club had a metting until 11. So i talked to josiah a lot. We're getting BBJaz all figured out. Sort of. Yeah i almost got grounded cause on thursday, i was gone all day at ashleys, and didnt tell my parents i was going, but my mom took off my grounding today, so i can still see Ashley. YES! Speaking of ashley, she's not gonna be happy with me the next time i see her, but its for a good thing. lol OK, everyone, a good book to read, Under the Overpass, by Mike Yankoski. I have somewhat of an idea that i might want to try that i got after reading the book. And i got this sweet idea for a new piece today. And i think i even have the perfect title. Guaya Guaya. Is that how you spell that Ash? HAHAHA lol
Thats all

[ music | The Josiah D. Bode trademark lol ]

Today was the best ever! Brendan and Fadra and Ashley and I all went to the movies. We saw Willy Wonka. Which would have been really good if it was the original, but it didnt fill the shoes of the first one. "Nothing is ever as good as the origianl" Anyway it was still really funny, and after that me and Fadra and Ashley went out to eat, that was awsome. We gave the waitress a hard time by hiding her tip and stuff. Then there was the saprano singing waiter that walked by our table. After that we just walked around and in the almost alley for a while. Fadra got a cap gun, so when the gangs attacked us, she could fight them off. That was awsome. ASHLEY IS THE BEST! We had so much fun. In like 4 hours i'm leaving for New York for a week, so i dont get to see her for way too long, so that sucks. But i suppose it will just make it that much better when i see you next monday. O and josiah, i may have another person for trombone for BBJaz, but i'm not so sure about them, i'll check them out a little more. Yeah the Josiah D. Bode trademark. Da da da da da dummmm. Clap clap clap calp, (waits 20 seconds) (goes on microphone) Wait, i'm not done yet! Ba Bummmmmmmmmm. YES! Well i'd better go and make sure i have a proper collection of the jazz greats for the trip. I'll miss you Ashley!

[ music | Our Sunday Best ]

Cant wait til tomorow. Been waiting for months for this. Stargate SG-1 season 9 and Stargate Atlantis season 2. Its gonna be sweet. Right now i'm listening to this awsome CD. Its called Our Sunday Best. It has like 4 of my favorite songs on it. Yeah so next week is VBS at church. I'm teaching 3rd grade. All I know, is these kids are going to know a hec of lot more about concert bands by the end of the week. The theme this year is safari, so that'll be fun. So i've decided to write a piano reduction of An American Elegy so i can play the whole score on the piano. I also just finished another short piece i've been trying to get right for about 6 months, so that made me happy. I'm also making an arrangment of In The Mood for BBjaz. But it is possibly my favorite jazz song of all time, so i dont want to screw up the quality of it, so i'm going to try to get my hands on an original score instead.

[ music | Anything by Micheal W. Smith ]

Today was pretty fun. Josiah came over and we started working on stuff for BBJazz. We got like 16 measures done on On Green Dolphin Street. We are arranging a version of it, and its gonna be sweet. By the way, anyone reading this who has played the Frank Mantooth arrangment of On Green Dolphin Street, besides me and Josiah, let me know, cause we could use your help with this. Yeah, so i cant wait til Stargate Alliance comes out, its going to be the sweetest vidoe game ever. Its not coming out until the end of this year, but thats ok, the new episodes will hold my attention for a while. I've started working a lot on my concert band peice, but a new one this time. Its much better than any of the other ones i've started, and hopefully i'll be able to do something with this one.

[ music | An American Elegy ]

Yeah so today all I did all day was pretty much listen, study, and play An American Elegy. I may be a tad obsessed. But at least I'm obsessed with a masterpiece. I haven't heard back from Frank Ticheli yet, but I'm givin it some time. I also e-mailed Micheal W. Smith, but he doesn't read his own mail. So I also e-mailed Windependence, which is a branch off a publishing company. The guy e-mailed me back and said he would send me a free recording of Perthshire Majesty, and some other free stuff, so tahts pretty sweet. I also today e-mailed Tyler Koontz, hopefully he'll get back to me soon, he is the master of finale, not only is he a good composer, but he knows everything about the program, so I'm going to get him to help me out. Yeah, so the other day I got Christina to listen to American Elegy, she said she cried the whole time, and that she is rededicating her life to the song. And I still think she's not as dumb as she looks.

[ music | An American Elegy, by Frank Ticheli ]

                                                                        an

                                                                American Elegy

An American Elegy was commissioned by the Columbine Commissioning Fund, a special project sponsored by the Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Colorado on behalf of the Columbine High School Band.  Contributers to the Fund included members, chapters, alumni, and friends of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Fraternity and Soroity.

The work received its premiere performance by the Columbine High School Band, William Biskup, Director, Frank Ticheli, guest conductor, on April 23, 2000.  Its premiere served as the centerpiece of a special commemorative concert given by the Columbine High School Band in conjuction with the University of Colorado Wind Symphony, held at Macky Hall in Boulder, Colorado.

An American Elegy is, above all, an expression of hope.  It was composed in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and to honor the survivors.  It is offered as a tribute to their great strength and courage in the face of a terrible tragedy.  I hope the can also serve as one reminder of how fragile and precious life is and how intimately connected we all are as human beings.

I was moved and honored by this commission invitation, and deeply inspired by the circumstances surrouding it.  Rarely has a work revealed itself to me with such powerful speed and clarity.  The first eight bars of the main melody cam to me fully in a dream.  Virtually every every element of the work was discovered within the span of about two weeks.  The remainder of my time was spent refining, developing, and orchestrating.

The work begins at the bottom of the ensemble's register, and ascends gradually to a heartfelt cry of hope.  The main  theme that follows, stated by the horns, reveals a more lyrical, serene side of the piece. A second theme, based on a simple repeated harmonic pattern, suggests yet another, more poignant mood.  These three moods- hope, serenity, and sadness- becomes intertwined throughout the work, defining its complex expressive character.  A four-part canon builds to a climactic quotation of the Columbine Alma Mater.  The music recedes, and an offstage trumpeter is heard, suggesting a celestial voice- a heavenly message.  The full ensemble returns with a final, exalted statement of the main theme.

Last week was the best ever. I was over at my grandma and grandpa's all week. It was so awsome. I even learned some inportant lessons. And I got to hang out with my cousin a lot. We did all sorts of stuff, we swam in the lake, went exploring through the woods, climbed to the top of a 75.5 foot tall tree (we measured it), went horseback riding, rescued music from my grandma's attic, and all sorts of stuff. I also got to play with the Albion Community Symphonic Band and the Albion Community Symphonic Orchestra. It was so awsome. With the orchestra I was boneing. And with the band, i got to play trumpet. They gave me 1st cause the only people that could hit double G were me and this old guy. Yeah and I learned a lot from my grandparents. Life lessons, good stuff like that. Yeah so I came home, found out that tom had called on tuesday, so i called him. Talked to him for like half an hour, he's coming home on monday and tuesday. i think he's golfing with sean, but i'm not quite sure. Yeah, then i worked outside today, for my mom and some people around the neighborhood, as soon as i get the money, i'm ordering the frank ticheli DVD set. Speaking of frank ticheli, i e-mailed him today. I told him how much i love american elegy and all that. Hopefully he'll reply. I also e-mailed some people to discuss american elegy, i dont know if they are as into it as me, but i'll soon find out. Well, i have to get up for church in 4 hours, so i'm giong to bed.
O yeah, and i realized christina isn't as dumb as she looks

hey, its about time i updated this thing. Its been like 2 weeks, o well. Yeah so today i went to angelas grad party all afternoon. That was awsome. the band kids, which was like 4 of us just sat there and talked the whole time. Yeah, and yesterday, on friday, tom and i went golfing all day, that was sweet. we are so slow becasue we sat on the benches before each hole and let every one play through us. Yeah we had some interesting discussions throughout the day. Then we went back to his house and played the pinao. Thats always fun. But now he's in ohio for the rest of the summer, so that sucks. I have to mail him some music, so when he comes back, we can play it. Yeah so i found something online that i have to buy. Like if i dont buy it, i may die. Its a DVD set called "A guide to conducting from the inside out, featuring An American Elegy, with frank ticheli" its all about how to conduct the song and how it was composed and crap like taht. Its so awsome. Yeah so i found a whole bunch of MCs music today, maybe i should return it. Yeah well i gotta go lift some heavy stuff or something.

Holy frickin crap. Why in the name of all things bright and beautiful on Gods green earth do i need or want 71 comments left on my live journal? Anyway, cedar point is on saturday, and i'm considering skipping, we cant march in a frickin parade block, and we cant even play marching music standing still. We suck, and most of our drummers aren't helping at all. Most, but not all. And by the way, our cadence sucks. I'm writing a new one. Yeah i'm glad dana is being drum major, cause jordan kinda really sucks. He gave us the wrong command 3 times in 7 seconds. It wouldnt be so bad if he didnt think he was like the worlds best drummer. News flash, he's not even section leader. Although i dont know if he knows that. And Mc frickin let him out of 1st hour today to lead the 8th graders. How stupid is that? Maybe if he was good. Maybe. But whatever, i dont have to put up with him. So yeah, cedar point is going to be fun. Kristen and i are going to skip the rides and find a field of dirt and drive lawn mowers over it the whole day. then make it a career. Yeah i'm going to go work on that cadence. GO LISTEN TO AMERICAN ELEGY, and if you already have, DO IT AGAIN.

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to work this stupid live journal thing, and its not working. And Claudia is not much help. Yeah, Java and Jazz was last night, it was freakin awsome. Swing Shift and 9th grade jazz both sounded great, and 8th sounded good for an 8th grade jazz band. And good news, i can feel my lips again. That's gonna come in handy, huh Claudia? Yeah, so after jaza and javv, claudia, kristen, becka, and I went to baldos for dinner. That was sweet. Good times. Man do i love straws. And claudia must not have taste buds. At the resteraunt, her and kristen went to the bathroom, and while they were gone, becka and i poured about half of the thing of salt on our table into claudia's drink. When they came back, she drank out of it and didn't even know, but then she wouldn't drink out of it when we told what we did, so she insisted that she drink out of my glass. Yeah were going to make the four of us going out to eat on friday night a regular thing. But only like once a month because claudia's expensive. To pay for her to eat i mean. She doesnt charge me for that. JK. I want you all to go to www.manhattanbeachmusic.com and listen to American Elegy by Frank Ticheli. It is like the best concert band piece ever written or something. Well i'm hungry so i'm gonig to go try to catch the ice cream van. Must be a stick shift
